doug stone arrested

his is 52-year-old Douglas Jackson Brooks.

Country music fans know him as Doug Stone, the singer-songwriter who had a string of chart-topping hits in the 1990's.

Stone rose from humble beginnings in Newnan, Georgia, to sell millions of records beginning with his 1990 debut single.”Better off in a pine box.”

Stone's career spanned over 20 years and his hits are still being played on radio stations across America. But recently has been living the hard life he usually sings about.

Wednesday night, stone played a surprise concert at Tootsie's Orchid Lounge at Pier Park.

About 2:30 Thursday morning, Panama City Beach police found Stone standing next to a car with a flat tire. He supposedly told officers he hit a curb.

The officers claim Stone was intoxicated, but because they could not prove he was driving, they called a tow truck and stone went back to his room at the Grand Panama Resort.

An hour later, police responded to a disturbance call at the Grand Panama. When they arrived, they say Stone had beaten up his 22-year-old son, Dustin Brooks.

They reportedly got into a fight over the disabled car and Stone's drinking.

"Who was battered and wished to press charges against his father," Maj. Dave Humphreys, of the Panama City Beach police said.

Stone was arrested and booked into the bay county jail. It's just the latest in a long list of struggles for stone.

This happened just one hour after Stone wrecked his car. Police were called to the scene of that incident, as well, but they let Stone go, even though they say he appeared intoxicated. Stone was standing outside the car when police arrived, so they couldn't prove that he was behind the wheel at the time of the accident. They insisted he have the car towed and sent him on his way.

He nearly died after a 1995 heart attack.

Then 2-years later, he was nearly killed in a plane crash. That marked the beginning of a career slide.

"Doug stone was a staple in country music radio," Todd Berry, Operations Manager of 92.5 WPAP said.

Todd Berry is operations manager for 92.5 WPAP in Panama City.

"Country music is about real life and it’s about real people, real struggles and Doug has had his share of them. If he chooses to overcome this he will," Berry said.

Stone had 15 Top Ten hits in the '90s, including the chart-toppers 'In a Different Light,' 'Why Didn't I Think of That,' 'A Jukebox With a Country Song' and 'Too Busy Being in Love.' He also acted in the Disney movie, 'Gordy.'

This is not Stone's first run-in with the law. He spent six months in jail back in 2005 for failing to pay alimony and child support, and failing to release his financial records.

Stone was released from the Bay County jail today on $3,000 bond.
